The Black Friday Effect

U.S. consumers’ behavior can be divided in: before and after Black Friday; this day received its name because of the police force and hospital personnel, who knew that the Friday after Thanksgiving Day was full of traffic jams and accidents; but also, of cluttered retail shops since families used the holiday to check on the first seasonal sales. This tradition has its origins to the great depression in 1930, when President Franklin moved thanksgiving a week before so retailers had an extra week of sales. The informal name stuck in when it appeared in an ad in 1966 in The National Philatelist.

Black Friday is the beginning of the great shopping season in the U.S. that day, costumers expect great discounts everywhere and retailers don’t disappoint them. Shoppers save throughout all year to spend on Black Friday, which is also a great economic indicator, for instance, in 2008, sales fell 3.4%, and the next year only rose .4%, this showed clearly the effects of the economic recession and the slow recovery.

Cyber Friday is the most recent addition to the Black Friday combo, since people were still buying on Monday; online retailers created the Cyber Friday in 2009 and had great success. The great majority of sales are tech related: computer equipment, LCD or LED screens, videogame consoles and gadgets, which rounds up the Cyber Monday Concept.

2010 Cyber Monday became the day with the highest expense in that year, even surpassing the Black Friday. This year the tendency kept on with a 17% increase against Black Friday.

This initiative was implemented in México with the “Buen Fin†(Good Weekend) in which retailers offered good electronic discounts, the goal was to increase sales up to 15%, the results surpassed the goal reaching more than 25%.
